now what?
Maybe you have dermatillomania, or OCD, or ADHD (like me!) and picked at every bump on your skin, leaving nasty, red, bumpier skin behind.
Maybe you’ve looked through google for what to do about it and all you can find is that you shouldn’t pick acne, but that ship sailed two hours ago and that feels like an impossible feat because your brain isn’t “normal” and you don’t mean to pick it but you do anyway and now you’re here.
I finally used my own experience and then dug a little deeper into the internet and found something that’s made my skin look way better literally less than three hours later, and woke up the next day - that’s today! - with skin that looks better than it usually does 3-4 days later.
Just a warning, it took me 1.5-2 hours to do all of this after picking, but if you’ve got time I recommend trying some of these methods and see if any work for you!
-note: none of this is actually professional advice or anything it’s just something that worked for me, so if you have any doubts/allergies please be careful!!
Step 1: Cold shower (Cleanser and Salicylic/Glycolic Acid)
This is totally just from experience, but I always get nasty scabs from my fingernails digging into my skin (and your fingernails are totally dirty and could leave you with infections, which has thankfully never happened to me but please take care of your skin!). Have a COLD - not freezing, but it should be distinctly cold and not lukewarm - shower, which should help calm your skin down a little bit.
Use your face cleanser, which is always softer on your skin than anything for your body, and any salicylic OR glycolic acid products that are for your face for the same reason.
I was using the Fresh Farmacy cleanser, but just switched to the Spectro dry skin cleanser (that’s just their site, but I use the green one that I got at Shoppers Drug Mart) since my body doesn’t love Lush and I’m allergic to fragrances.
I use glycolic acid to exfoliate my face, since my skin is pretty sensitive, and have the NeoStrata glycolic cleanser (that’s the closest I can find to it), but a salicylic acid product should work just as well.
Step 2: Ice
This is pretty self explanatory. Grab some ice packs and press them onto the nasty red areas, holding it directly to the skin until it’s too cold to leave it there (this is probably going to have people yelling at me but it’s the only way that works for me). Just keep moving them around until the area is less red and bumpy. Pro tip - if it takes a while, put on some gloves.
Step 3: Aloe Vera gel
I use 100% aloe Vera gel as a moisturizer, and it cools skin and locks in moisture which is exactly what your skin needs at that point so lather it on if you’ve got some. Online also suggests using some cucumber slices, so feel free to try that out if you don’t have any.
Step 4: Honey mask
This was the first time I ever tried this and my skin looks good so I think it helped but maybe it didn’t, take it with a grain of salt, but I mixed honey with some turmeric and cinnamon and lathered it onto the spots with a Q-tip. I melted the honey for 10 secs, could’ve probably done less, and just stirred the other two in. Be careful with turmeric because, as I read later, it can turn you yellow (which didn’t happen to me but everyone’s different). Leave it on for 10-15 minutes then wash it off with a damp cloth that can be stained yellow, then throw on some more aloe to get the moisture in again. If you don’t have aloe still, a regular moisturizer should also work, but you’ll lose the cooling aspect of it.
Then because I’m also working on all of this, some preventative steps that help me not pick my skin as badly:
1. Always covering the area at home
I pick at my shoulders, chest, and back, so I always have an oversized tshirt on - not seeing it makes it harder to do.
2. Cover/reduce/get rid of mirrors
I used to have a million mirrors, but I got rid of any magnifying ones when this became a problem. I had to cover my large mirror with a sheet so that I can move it to see outfits but can’t get close enough to do makeup and see dots - my other mirror keeps me a foot away since it’s on a shelf.
3. Shower in the dark
Showers were the worst for me, especially since our lights amplified problem areas - I light a nice candle and enjoy a shower in that plus a nightlight, which is also nice for the self care aspects I guess. Mostly I just can’t see all the nasty spots.
That’s what I’ve found through my efforts to stop picking my skin, so use any ideas that seem helpful and please leave more if you can think of any!

Also both of these sources had sources that I didn’t look too deep into since I was panicking about going out with ugly skin, but if you’re worried look into them! And maybe let me know if they’re awful lies I’d love to hear from people who actually know something!
